JOHANNESBURG – Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams has been nominated for the 2024 Ballon d’Or awards.
The Mamelodi Sundowns shotstopper (32) becomes the first goalkeeper from South Africa to be nominated for the Yashin Trophy while playing for a club in Africa.
The award is given annually to an outstanding goalkeeper.
Williams appeared in the final 10-man list that was revealed on Wednesday evening.
Williams led Bafana Bafana to a bronze medal at the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast earlier this year, where he made a name for himself saving penalties.
He also helped Sundowns in their inaugural African Football League title run and the 2023/24 Premiership trophy.
Williams faces stiff competition from the likes of Argentina’s World Cup winning goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez and Spain’s Unai Simon, just to mention a few.
