A woman burnt effigies of her husband, mother-in-law, father-in-law, and sister-in-law instead of Ravana on Dussehra in Uttar Pradesh’s Hamirpur district. The video of the unique effigy burning has gone viral on social media.
The incident took place in Hamirpur’s Muskara, where a woman named Priyanka staged an unconventional Ravana effigy burning by using photographs of her husband, in-laws, and sister-in-law.
Priyanka was married to Sanjeev Dixit 14 years ago. She claimed her husband had an affair with his sister’s friend, Pushpanjali, even before their marriage. Soon after their wedding, Sanjeev left Priyanka and began living with Pushpanjali. When Priyanka protested, her in-laws, including her mother-in-law, father-in-law, and sister-in-law, refused to support her, forcing her to struggle for 14 years.
On Dussehra, Priyanka took matters into her own hands and burned the effigies in front of her husband’s house. She aimed to send a message to society, stating that “Ravana-like people” should be rejected and burned in the same way.
Sharing her ordeal, Priyanka said, “It has been 14 years since my marriage, and yet my exile has not ended.”
She also appealed to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for justice, expressing disappointment that despite the government’s “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao” initiative, she, an educated daughter, is still seeking protection.
Priyanka has demanded strict action against her husband and in-laws, calling for justice from the current government.
